Citizenship and residency by investment for United States citizens

Written for United States persons, who face a reporting regime no other nationality does. Our US desk sits in Sugar Land, Texas; the group's headquarters is in Dubai.

American applicants are among the easiest files to approve and the most complex to plan. A US passport already carries wide visa-free access, so the case for a second citizenship is almost never travel. It is optionality: another place to live, another jurisdiction for business, and a hedge that does not depend on one government.

The complication is that the United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live. A second passport does not change that, and any adviser who implies otherwise should be disregarded immediately.

Reporting obligations that continue

Acquiring a second citizenship or a foreign residence permit does not end US filing. Worldwide income remains reportable. Foreign financial accounts above threshold remain reportable under FBAR and FATCA rules, and foreign entities, trusts and certain investments carry their own forms.

This is information, not tax advice. Speak to a US tax professional before you structure anything, and treat any plan that depends on non-disclosure as disqualifying.

Source of funds for American applicants

Due diligence units generally find US files well documented, because the paper trail exists. Expect to provide filed federal returns, brokerage and bank statements, entity ownership records for any operating business, and documentation for property sales or liquidity events.

The recurring friction points are pass-through business income without personal distributions, crypto proceeds without an exchange trail, and gifts between family members without a deed.

Which routes make sense

For most American families the shortlist reduces to three shapes. A fast Caribbean citizenship for optionality and estate planning. A Gulf residence, most often the UAE Golden Visa, for people who will actually spend time there and want a low-tax base of operations. A European residence where schooling, healthcare and proximity are the driver and citizenship, if it ever comes, is a decade away.

  • Optionality and speed: Caribbean citizenship, no residence requirement.
  • Operating base and low tax: UAE Golden Visa with a company or property route.
  • Family relocation to Europe: Portugal, Greece and Spain-type residence permits.

Renunciation is a separate decision

Formal expatriation is the only thing that ends US worldwide taxation, and it carries an exit tax regime for covered expatriates plus permanent consequences. Acquiring a second citizenship first is a prerequisite, not a step toward it. We do not advise on renunciation; we make sure clients understand it is a distinct, professionally advised decision.

Questions

Frequently asked from United States

Can US citizens hold dual nationality?
United States law permits dual nationality. The restriction, if any, comes from the other country. Each program page states whether the country recognises it.
Will a second passport reduce my US taxes?
No. US citizens are taxed on worldwide income regardless of any other citizenship or residence. Only formal expatriation changes that, and it has its own tax consequences.
Do I need to report the new citizenship?
There is no single form for acquiring citizenship, but foreign accounts, entities and assets acquired alongside it are generally reportable. Confirm your position with a US tax professional.
Where is your US office?
Our United States desk is at 503 Avery Dr, Sugar Land, Texas. The group's headquarters is in Dubai, with offices across several other markets.
